…for where you go, I will go, and where you lodge, I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God. Ruth 1:16
The book of Ruth is one of my absolute favorites…for many reasons. It is the story of a young woman, Ruth, who is widowed at a young age and the relationship she has with her mother-in-law, Naomi. Naomis tragically lost her husband and two sons. It is a story of devotion and redemption.
Trying to give Ruth a new start, Naomi encourages her to return home to her parents’ home so that she can begin life again, with a new husband. Yet Ruth clings to Naomi, who has been left with absolutely nothing.
Aspects of this story resonate strongly in my own life story…one of those aspects is my sweet mother-in-law, Mary Picciuti. She lost her first born. Now that I’ve had a baby, I better understand what that means…though not entirely. Rather than drowning in her own sorrow, Mary took me under her wing and nursed me back to life. She refused to let me feel alone while I began life again.
I dedicate this song to Mom. Thank you for protecting me until my heart found its home.
